Armen Vartian

Armen Vartian is an American attorney who has practiced law since 1981 and has specialized in art and collectibles matters since 1984. He is licensed in the states of California, Illinois and New York, the United States Supreme Court, and numerous U.S. federal appeals and district courts nationwide. His clients include leading international auction houses, dealers, collectors and artists.

As an attorney, Vartian has litigated more than 100 arbitrations to the award stage through the American Arbitration Association, JAMS, and the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, among others, and in addition he has administered arbitration proceedings conducted by the Professional Numismatists Guild, for which he has served as Legal Counsel (as well as being a member) since 1992. He was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.

Vartian has written extensively on legal matters relating to art and collectibles, including the renowned 1997 book entitled “Legal Guide to Buying and Selling Art and Collectibles”. He also has taught classes to attorneys and law students relating to art law, and has contributed to numerous other art law publications. Vartian has served as Vice-Chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Art & Cultaral Heritage Law since 2015, and prior to that was Vice-Chair of the ABA’s Annual Review of Intellectual Property Law.

Vartian has a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School (1981), where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard International Law Journal. He also has a B.A. degree in history from the City University of New York (1978).
