Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Basel; Judge, Basel Civil Court (Switzerland)
Beat is a judge at the Basel Civil Court and Professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Basel for Private Law, Art Law and Comparative Law. He is the author of the book "Restitution von Kulturgut" (Bern 2009) [published in English; "The Restitution of Cultural Assets" (Berne/Utrecht 2009)] and of several publications in Art and Restitution Law. Since 2010 he has been the co-organizer of the yearly conference "Art & Law" in Basel, teaching Private Law and Art Law courses mainly at the University of Basel. He was teaching in the Executive Master in Art Market Studies at Zurich University and is a regular speaker in the Art Law Program (Kunstrecht Universitätslehrgang) in Vienna.
Beat’s law practice has included all fields of private law and private international law since 1998. He has been serving as a Presiding Judge at the Basel Civil Court since 2011. In this function he has also gained a wide range practice and expertise in conciliation. He was advisor to Museums and the Swiss Society of Archaeologists and was a member of the Cultural Heritage Law Committee of the International Law Association (ILA). He was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.
Beat’s educational background includes: lic. iur (1994); Dr. iur. (1998); Admission to the Bar in Basel, Switzerland (2001); Associate Professor (2009); Professor (2014). He is additionally fluent in English, French and German.
