Independent practitioner, Global Editor of the CISG Database at the Institute of International Commercial Law
Dr. Gizem Alper is a dual qualified bilingual attorney, mediator and arbitrator focused on art law, copyright, entertainment and commercial law, specifically the CISG (Convention on the International Sale of Goods), UNIDROIT Commercial law principles and other uniform international commercial laws. She is an independent neutral (arbitrator and mediator) and acts as legal advisor to law firms in Istanbul and New York. She has taught courses on the CISG, contract law and corporate law in various universities. She is currently the Global Editor of the Pace CISG Database at the Institute of International Commercial Law. She wrote about the ultra vires doctrine as a tool for ensuring justice, fairness and equity- principles crucial to all aspects of alternative dispute reoslution. Gizem is a frequent speaker and has published on issues related to the CISG, commercial law, mediation, arbitration and business.
Gizem’s law practice has included arbitration and/or mediation since 2019. She has been involved in cross- border commercial arbitration and mediations and is empaneled in various community based and international panels, including WIPO. She has also completed the MediateArt program of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) New York and the Part 146 mandatory court mediation program for New York. She has participated as faculty and judge at law school- and Bar Association- sponsored national and international negotiation, arbitration and mediation moot court events. She was appointed to the original Arbitration and Mediation pools of CAfA in 2022.
She serves as the Secretary for the Commercial Law and Uniform State Laws Committee of the Association of the City Bar of New York. She is a member of the Dispute Resolution Section of the New York State Bar Association, as well as the Istanbul Bar, LCIA European Users' Council, BVI Arbitration Group, and the Silicon Valley Arbitrators and Mediators Center (SVAMC) North American Group and the Working Group on ODR.
Gizem’s educational background includes: Istanbul University (PhD); Leiden University (LL.M.); Pace Law School (NY) (LL.M.); Ankara University (LL.B). She is licensed to practice law in Turkey (Istanbul) and New York.
