Herman Verbist

Herman is an attorney, mediator and arbitrator focused on commercial law. He is the founder and former president of the Belgisch-Deutsche Juristenvereinigung (Belgian-German Lawyers Association). From 1988 until 1996, he served as counsel at the Secretariat of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris where he was involved in the administrative supervision of numerous ICC arbitrations. Since 2016, he is Chairman of the arbitrators of the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He published as author or co-author more than 170 articles on arbitration and alternative dispute resolution both in domestic and in international law periodicals, as well as various commentaries on Arbitration Rules.

Herman’s law practice has included arbitration and mediation since 1988. He as served as Arbitrator and Mediator in a wide range of commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level.

He is a member of the Board of CEPANI (Belgian Center for Arbitration and Mediation)(since 2001); Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit; Comité Français de l’Arbitrage; Association Suisse de l’Arbitrage; London Court of International Arbitration; American Arbitration Association; ICCA - International Council for Commercial Arbitration; ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. He is registered on the lists of arbitrators with various arbitration institutions: CAS, VIAC, Polish Chamber of Commerce, Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ICDR, AIAC, HKIAC, KCAB, SIAC, Pacific International Arbitration Centre, Thailand Arbitration Center. He was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.

Herman’s educational background includes: Dr.Jur., University of Ghent, 2008 (J.D.); Lic.Jur., University of Leuven (K.U.L.), 1982 (M.A.); postgraduate law courses in Germany (University of Tübingen, Court of Appeal of Düsseldorf; 1982-1983) and in England (King’s College, University of London, 1986).

He has taught as a visiting professor at the Gent Law Faculty from 1996 until 2013 the course on international commercial arbitration. Moreover, he has lectured in the field of arbitration at various other Universities (K.U.Leuven, 1993, 1994 and 1997; Université Libre de Bruxelles - Ecole de Commerce Solvay, 1999-2003; University College Dublin, 1999 and 2000; City University Hong Kong, 2014; University Paris X – Nanterre, 2015; Europa-Institut Saarland University, Saarbrücken, 2020).
