Ilmars is attorney-at-law, arbitrator, conciliator, mediator, trade mark and design attorney focused on art law, intellectual property law, including law related to industrial designs and copyright, entertainment and commercial law. He is the co-author of the book "Employees` Intellectual Property Rights" 1st ed. and 2nd ed. published by Wolters Kluwer. Ilmars is a frequent speaker and has published on issues related to commercial and intellectual property law.

Ilmar’s law practice has included arbitration, conciliation, mediation and litigation since 2004. He has served as arbitrator, conciliator, mediator and litigator in a wide range of art law, intellectual property law and commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Riga Arbitration Court Panel of Arbitrators for domestic and international arbitrations. He has participated in several international arbitrations also as a counsel. He has considerable experience in disputes related to copyright collective management, e. g., to this date Ilmars has taken part in 22 complex cases in which considerable amounts were at stake. Ilmars has participated as a lecturer on intellectual property law and dispute resolution. He was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.

Ilmars has been highly ranked in the field of arbitration, conciliation, mediation, litigation of intellectual property law disputes by Benchmark Litigation, Who is Who Legal, IP Stars, WTR 1000 and Client Choice. He is also a member of Latvian Bar Association, AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property), Latvian Association of Professional Patent Attorneys (where he also is a member of the disciplinary committee), appointed as advisory expert of the China National Advisory Center for Overseas Intellectual Property Dispute Settlement, including ADR.

Ilmar’s educational background includes: Master of European Intellectual Property Law, Stockholm University, Sweden (LL.M.) (2017); Master of Laws, University of Latvia, Latvia (Mag. iur.) (2007). His working languages are English, Russian, and Latvian.
