Jaap is an attorney and arbitrator focused on art law and commercial law.
Jaap’s law practice has included arbitration and mediation since 1998. He served as Arbitrator in a wide range of art law and commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level. He is a member of the Dutch Restitutions Committee. He served as a partner of Clifford Chance LLP from 2007-2019. Before joining Clifford Chance, he was a partner at Houthoff law firm since 1992. He was Deputy Chair of the Dutch Arbitration Board for the Graphic Industry ("Scheidsgerecht voor de Grafische Industrie") from 1998-2007. In both firms he served in various management positions. He is a member of the Dutch Vereniging voor Kunst Cultuur Recht (Association for Art, Culture and Law). He was appointed to the original Arbitration pools of CAfA in January 2020.
He is Past Chair of the Project Finance Subcommittee of the International Bar Association. He is member of the Supervisory Board of SRAL (a leading institute specialized in the conservation and restoration of painted art works) and serves on the Board of two foundations in the sector of performing arts.
Jaap’s educational background includes a master degree ("meester in de rechten") of Leiden University in 1983. He is fluent in English and Dutch.
