Johannes P. Willheim

Partner of the Global Disputes Practice of Jones Day

Dr Johannes P. Willheim is an international attorney, arbitrator, mediator and negotiator with over 25 years of experience. He is a partner of the Global Disputes Practice of Jones Day, working from the firm’s offices in Paris, London and Frankfurt, and an Adjunct Professor for International Commercial Arbitration at the Strauss Institute of Pepperdine University as well as a guest lecturer at various leading academic institutions around the globe, like the University of Chicago Law School, Peking University and the Juridicum Stockholm.

Dr Willheim has extensive experience in art, media and entertainment law. He has represented leading artists, collectors and galleries in authenticity, IP and ownership disputes. He has advised leading international publishing houses, radio and TV networks, new media companies and associations of publishers and broadcasters in multiple commercial and corporate transactions, as well as represented them in court, arbitration, administrative and regulatory proceedings, including antitrust/competition law proceedings before the European Commission. As a former legal representative of the Austrian Association of Book Publishers and Book Sellers, he is co-author of the Austrian Book Pricing Act.

Over the years, Dr Willheim has sat as an arbitrator on multiple international arbitrations around the globe in ad hoc proceedings as well as proceedings governed by the rules of leading arbitral institutions. He is a member of the Appointing Committee of the German Arbitration Institute (DIS), member of the International Advisory Board of the IBA-VIAC Mediation & Negotiation Competition and bar examiner of the Austrian Bar Association.
Dr Willheim is dedicated to what he refers to as “Integrated Dispute Management”, a systematic approach to managing and resolving disputes which combines traditional dispute resolution methods with analytical and project management techniques. As a university teacher, author and frequent speaker at conferences, he is passionate about training and inspiring the next generation of dispute professionals and to contributing to the constant improvement of managing and resolving disputes.

Dr Willheim is a graduate of the Juridicum Vienna/Austria (“Mag. iur” and “Dr. iur”), the University of St. Gallen/Switzerland (“M.B.L.-HSG”), King’s College London/UK (“PG Diploma in EU Competition Law”) and the University of Chicago Law School/USA (“LL.M.”).

He is admitted to the Austrian Bar through the Vienna Bar Association, and the German Bar through the Bar Association of Frankfurt am Main.
