Makoto Shimada is an attorney qualified in Japan and arbitrator focused on art law, copyright, entertainment and commercial law. He is a founding member of SAH & Co. and lecturer of the Master’s Degree Program (LL.M) at Keio University Law School, where he has been teaching graduate courses on Art and Law, Arbitration, Mediation and English Law since 2004. He is the author of Introduction to Art Law, Keio University Press (2021), ‘Art attribution and seller’s responsibility: comparative study of Japanese and English law’ 46 Keio law journal (2021), ‘Art and cultural dispute settlement and ADR’ 44 Keio law journal (2020), ‘Legal Aspects of Special Exhibitions at Museums in Japan’ 23 Art Antiquity and Law 113 (2018), etc. Forthcoming publications include a book chapter on The Art Law Review, Business Research Ltd. (2022), an article on ‘Market Power in art auction in Japan’ in Beyond Border, Caleidscopio (2023), and Casebook on Art Law, Keio University Press (2023). Makoto Shimada is a frequent speaker and has published extensively on issues related to art law and business. His recent speech includes “acquisition and management of NFT tied arts by museums” at the 26th ICOM General Conference of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Fine Arts in Prague 2022.
Makoto Shimada’s law practice has included arbitration since 1982. He has served as Arbitrator in a wide range of commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level. He is a member and fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration (FCIArb), International Association of Lawyers, art law commission and international arbitration commission, and Institute of Art and Law. Until 2022, He participated as faculty at Keio University Law School, and conducted training at the international dispute resolution program.
He is Past Vice-President of Art Law Commission, International Association of Lawyers, Examiner for the National Bar Examination, Ministry of Justice, and Chair the Lawyers Training Committee, the Daiichi Tokyo Bar Association. He is an Honoured Visiting Professor of City Law School, University of London.
