Marcos is an attorney and arbitrator based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a partner of the leading Brazilian law firm of Veirano Advogados, where he has been developing a practice on art, cultural institutions and heritage law in addition to his primary activity as a transactional and projects lawyer. A former lecturer in contracts with an LL.M. in comparative law, Marcos has acted from time to time as arbitrator, mostly in contract disputes. He is a listed arbitrator in the panel of leading institutions in Brazil (CMBA) and China (CIETAC and SHIAC), as well as a member of the International Arbitration Institute (IAI Paris).
Marcos is invited regularly to speak in conferences and make presentations in Brazil and abroad, including in New York, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai and Beijing, where he presented in the 2018 China Arbitration Week seminar. In 2019, he was named a research fellow of the China-Latin America Legal Research Center of the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) School of Law. He has published articles and reviews in Brazil and abroad on private law, arbitration law and more recently the 2019 Brazilian law on endowment funds and its potential for channeling philanthropic private funding for cultural projects and institutions in Brazil.
In Rio de Janeiro, Marcos serves pro bono as director for international affairs of the Association of Friends of Brazil’s National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) and is a founding member of the thematic working group on ‘Culture and International Relations’ of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). Abroad, he is an officer of the Art, Cultural Institutions and Heritage Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA). He also formed and co-headed for three years the Commercial Law and Practice Commission of the Brazilian Chapter of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Brazil). He was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.
Marcos Ludwig’s educational background includes: Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil (LL.B. 2000 and LL.M. 2002 with honors); McGill University, Montreal, Canada (LL.M. – ‘Dean’s Honor List’) (2007); ICC Institute, Paris, France (Masterclass for Arbitrators). He is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese and has an additional good command of German.
