Marieke is an attorney and arbitrator specialising in international arbitration since 1995. She is a renowned international arbitration counsel who also represents clients in litigation, typically handling corporate and commercial cross border disputes involving joint ventures, acquisitions and trade matters and arbitration related litigation. She represented both the NAI and the ICC when they were involved in Dutch court litigation.
Marieke heads the Litigation Department of Allen & Overy in Amsterdam and is on the steering committee of the Firm's Global Arbitration Practice.
Since 2014, Marieke sits as the Dutch member on the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris. She regularly sits as arbitrator herself, as chair, sole and co-arbitrator. Since 2010, Marieke is also a deputy judge at the Court of Appeal in Arnhem-Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. Marieke was appointed to the original Arbitration and Mediation pools of CAfA in January 2020.
Marieke regularly speaks and writes on arbitration. Most recently, Marieke spoke at international arbitration conferences in Helsinki, Frankfurt and Brussels on topics like interim measures, expedited proceedings and witness and expert evidence. She teaches a graduate course in commercial arbitration at the University of Amsterdam and the Arbitration Secretary Course at the NAI. Marieke is the author of "Litigation in the Netherlands, Civil Procedure, Arbitration and Administrative Litigation" (Kluwer, 2012, 2nd ed.).
