Independent Arbitrator
Willem van Baren is an attorney and arbitrator focused on commercial law and arbitration. Until his retirement in 2016, he was a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration Department of Allen & Overy’s Amsterdam office. From 2011 through 2018 he was President of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute.
Willem’s law practice has included arbitration (and some mediation) since 1992. Since 2005, he has served as President, Co-arbitrator, Emergency and Sole Arbitrator in a wide range of commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level under multiple arbitration rules. As attorney he represented clients is disputes in various areas of corporate, commercial, financial and trade law, including art law. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Dutch Arbitration Association, the Supervisory Board of the Royal Dutch Dental Association KNMT, the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR and the ICC Institute of World Business Law. He is on the Panels of Arbitrators of the NAI, AIAC, KCAB and SIAC and is an active Member of ASA, CEPANI, DAA, DIS, IBA, ICCA and the LCIA. He was a Substitute Judge at the Court of Appeal at the Hague, The Netherlands, and is a CEDR Accredited Mediator. He was appointed to the CafA Arbitrator Pool in January 2020.
Willem’s educational background includes: ICC Advanced Training – Master Class for Arbitrators (1990); LLM, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam (1980-1984); MPH Health Policy and Management, Harvard University, USA (1984-1985); and DDS Dentistry, Free University, Amsterdam (1974-1980).
