Professor Zdeněk Nový

Arbitrator; Attorney and Owner, Nový Legal; Senior Lecturer in International and EU law

Zdeněk is an attorney at law, university lecturer and arbitrator focused on public and private international law, international arbitration, contract law, law of public auctions, competition law, and commercial law in general. He is a founding member of Nový Legal – legal office specialized in international commerce and arbitration and located in the Czech Republic. He is also a senior lecturer in International and EU law at Faculty of Law, Masaryk University in Brno, the Czech Republic, where he acted, inter alia, as a supervisor of theses dealing with international protection of cultural heritage. He is the author of more than 60 publications concerning wide variety of issues related to international arbitration, conflict of laws and international commerce. Zdeněk has been a frequent speaker at international and domestic conferences.

Zdeněk’s law practice has included arbitration since 2012. He has served as Arbitrator in a number of commercial disputes at both the domestic and international level. He is a practitioner of the Vienna International Arbitration Centre, arbitrator of the Arbitration Court attached to the Economic Chamber of the Czech Republic and Agricultural Chamber of the Czech Republic. He acted as a counsel and of counsel in international commercial and investment arbitrations. He has also served as a party-appointed expert on the Czech and EU law before foreign courts. He is a member of various arbitration associations, e.g. German Arbitration Institute (DIS) and Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA). He has regularly acted as an arbitrator in Willem C. Vis Arbitration Moot Court. He received a number of scholarships and grants. His research stays abroad include European University Institute and the UNIDROIT Institute. Zdeněk was appointed to the original Arbitration pool of CAfA in January 2020.

Zdeněk’s educational background includes: Private International Law (Ph.D. at the Faculty of Law, Masaryk University, Brno, The Czech Republic in 2012); International, European and Comparative Laws (LL.M. European University Institute, Florence, Italy in 2013); Law and Legal Science (M.A. Faculty of Law, Masaryk University, Brno, The Czech Republic in 2006); Certificate in International Commercial and Investment Arbitration. He is a native Czech speaker and fluent in English, furthermore he has a good working knowledge in French and Italian and a passive knowledge in German and Latin.
