Erlend Haaskjold

Partner and Head of International Arbitration, Arntzen de Besche

Erlend is an attorney, arbitrator and mediator focused on art law, copyright, property and commercial law. His law practice has included arbitration and mediation since 2008, and he has served as Arbitrator and Mediator in a wide range of commercial and art law disputes at both the domestic and international level. He has acted for some of the major auction houses in Scandinavia, and he regularly advises on contracts relating to sale and loan of works of art. In addition, he has extensive experience with chain of title and property disputes.

He is a visiting lecturer in commercial law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo, and has for several years been External Examiner in Negotiation and Mediation at postgraduate level. He has taught a number of graduate courses on commercial law, property and restitution. He is the author of some of the leading textbooks on the law of obligations and contractual interpretation. He has a particular interest in art law and is a frequent speaker at international conferences.

Erlend is a member of the Norwegian Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the International Law Association. He is a Chartered Arbitrator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London). He is empaneled on a number of international panels of arbitrators, such as the Presidential Panel of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the WIPO Arbitration Center’s List of Arbitrators, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre’s Panel of Arbitrators, Asian International Arbitration Centre, Indian Council of Arbitration, KCAB International, and the Vilnius Court of Commercial Arbitration.

He is also a court-appointed mediator for the Oslo City Court and the Borgarting Court of Appeal. Since 2018 he has been President of the National Mediation Board for Intellectual Property Disputes, appointed by the Norwegian Ministry of Industry and Trade. He was appointed to the Arbitration and Mediation pools of CAfA in January 2020.

He has participated as faculty and judge at a number of law school-sponsored events, mainly in the field of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. He is Past Chair of the Continuing Professional Development programme in commercial arbitration run by JUC, one of the major CPD providers in Scandinavia, and he has frequent engagements as guest lecturer in arbitration and mediation.

Erlend’s educational background includes: University of Oslo, State Examination in Law (cand.jur.) 1996; London School of Economics, LL.M. 1999 (British Chevening Scholar); University of Oxford, Christ Church, B.C.L. 2005. He is fluent in English and the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Danish and Swedish).
